What is a mattress topper?
A mattress topper sits in between your mattress and your bedding, adding a soft layer of cushioning, usually 3-5cm deep. They can vary by their filling, but the most common include memory foam, latex or wool.
Mattress toppers differ from mattress protectors mainly by their function. Toppers are designed to increase your comfort, whereas mattress protectors can help prevent stains or damage to your mattress. Mattress protectors are usually thinner and can also be waterproof.

The benefits of mattress toppers
Buying a topper for your mattress is an affordable way of increasing your comfort. If your mattress is old or causing discomfort, adding extra support and padding from a topper could offer a comfortable night’s rest without you having to pay for a new mattress.
The same is true for when your mattress is too hard or firm regardless of its age. Mattress toppers add an extra layer between you and the sleeping surface. If you choose a soft topper, perhaps memory foam or a luxurious knitted mattress cover, your hard mattress will feel much comfier.
Finally, mattress toppers add a layer between your mattress and your bedding. This means that any spills or liquids will go to your topper before damaging your mattress. Due to the composition and the materials they are made from, they can cope with liquid damage better than mattresses and are both easier to wash and cheaper to replace should any damage occur.
What are the different types of mattress topper?
Mattress toppers are designed to provide support for a variety sleep needs and preferences. There are four main types of mattress topper: memory foam, latex, woollen and cooling. Read on to learn more about each specific type of topper:
1. Memory foam mattress toppers
Memory foam mattress toppers mould to the contours of your body and support your pressure points. They also help prevent tossing and turning. Memory foam mattress toppers are also great for those on a budget who want the technology without having to invest in a new mattress.
2. Normal Soft mattress toppers
The normal foam mattress topper has an elastic material which responds to the movements of your body, cushioning you throughout the night. This is best for those who are prone to tossing and turning in their sleep.
3. Woollen mattress toppers
Toppers made from wool are one of the most durable types and are especially useful to those who suffer from allergies, due to the natural components. A wool mattress topper also offers comfort and support throughout the night.
4. Cooling mattress toppers
If you need to regulate your temperature, cooling mattress toppers with cooling gel infused memory foam are ideal. Suitable all year round, they also help to keep you warm when you’re cold. This makes a temperature-regulating mattress topper an excellent choice for partners who tend to overheat when sharing a bed.
